These outlines hold each enamel color fill in place. The recessed areas are filled using a colored hard enamel powder, which completely covers the raised metal outlines. The pins are then fired at high temperature in a kiln, in order to melt the hard enamel powder. From there, the pins are buffed and polished so that the enamel is level with the raised metal. This ensures that the raised metals are mirror finished, and that the surface of the pin is smooth to the touch.
